Best Choreography Award, Dinosaurs and ACE Funding

Out with 2011, Bring on 2012!

UK MVA Award and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs

Well, it’s that time of year to reflect on the past 12 months and look forward to what’s coming up for 2012… it’s been exciting and very, very busy!

Music videos have become a staple this year. Two of the videos I worked on were nominated at the 2011 UK Music Video Awards (MVA's).
"My Heart Skips a Beat," by Olly Murs featuring the Rizzle Kicks, directed by Corin Hardy was nominated for the People's Choice Award.

And I’m thrilled to announce that we won Best Choreography for the video “Keep the Lights On,” by the Wave Machines and directed by Aneil Karia (pictured below).

The award is a huge honour and an evening I won’t soon forget!

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs
The award has already turned into some totally awesome opportunities. Most recently I again teamed up with the wonderful gang at Skin Flicks to choreograph the new video, “Tapes and Money,” for Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. This one was rather special as I am a huge fan of his music, attitude and dinosaur costume! It was a treat to meet and work with someone that I have admired for several years.

The video was wonderfully bizarre, loads of fun and directed by the General Assembly. Aside from directing TEED’s last video, “Trouble,” and being some of the nicest guys I have ever had the pleasure of working with, they have just been included in Saatchi’s Best New Director Showcase at the Cannes Film Festival.

I have been one of the invited artists to take part in East London Dance Bank 2012. As the host borough of the 2012 London Olympics, I am looking forward to a whole heap of new possibilities!

Finally....
So a lot has happened this year, and a lot more to come next year. A big thank you to the myriad of wild and wonderful people I have met and worked with on the sublime and ridiculous projects this year! I'm loving this work and it's due greatly to the people I get to work with.

And now it's time for a break... I will be back in the New Year!

Arts Council Success!

The “Encounters,” Project has just been awarded a Grant for the Arts from the Arts Council.

“Encounters,” is a site-specific installation and interactive live performance placed in the empty shops and disused spaces of the Harlow town centre. It is created, devised and performed entirely by local residents and facilitated by myself and digital media artist Zach Walker.

Work on “Encounters,” will hit full tilt in the New Year and this is where a great deal of my energy will be! There are 2 apprentice positions for this project so if you are an emerging artist and interested in site-specific and community engaged work, we will be recruiting in January through DanceDigital who have commissioned the project.

Work continues on the “12 Moves,”with Dancefest, SDNA TV and Mira Calix as we gear up for the finale event “12 Moves: After Dark,” on March 24, 2012. As part of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad dancers have ranged in age from 2-92 and events have included flash mobs, guerrilla projections, animated creatures, and pop up dance in empty shops.

The finale event will incorporate dance, massive outdoor projections, an original score, and some more surprises still to come! It is shaping up to be the biggest dance event ever put on in Worcester and there’s still a chance to be involved. Best Choreography 2011 UK Music Video Awards

I'm pleased to announce that we won Best Choreography in a Video at the 2011 UK MVA's for the Wave Machines, Keep The Lights On!

The video was directed by Aneil Karia, danced by Ann Pidcock, Lexi Bradburn, Laura Williamson and Jo Stobbs, produced by Magnified Pictures.

This is the first year the MVA's have included a choreography category and I'm over the moon to receive the award.

UK Video Music Awards Nomination

I'm pleased to report that the video I choreographed for the Wave Machines last year has been announced on the shortlist of the 2011 UK Video Music Awards (MVA's) for Best Choreography.

'Keep the Lights On,' is part of a short list that includes Radiohead (choreographed by Wayne McGregor) and Two Door Cinema Club. For the full nominations list please go to: www.ukmva.com.

The awards will be announced at the MVA Awards in Leicester Square on November 8th.

It's true, it really is an honor to be nominated.

12 Moves Flashmobs - 2012 Cultural Olympiad

This weekend marks the culmination of several months' rehearsals with dancers from all over Worcester. Flashmobs will be popping up and disappearing all over the county this Saturday, July 23rd. Ranging in age from 8 to 60, the dancers have been working with the professional dance squads and myself to devise and perform the 12 Moves Flashmobs, produced by Dancefest Worcester. Working under the artistic direction of SDNA TV digital media artists, and collaborating with composer Mira Calix, and dramaturg Steve Wilson, the team have been busy preparing for this big day! In the lead up to next year's finale even in March, it is the largest event that Dancefest have ever undertaken and anticipation is running high...

ironINC in Africa - OYO in Namibia

Following on from the success of the previous ironINC in Africa Projects, I am thrilled to be heading out to that extraordinary place to be involved in a great project. This year's project is to be with OYO - Ombetja Yehinga Organization Trust based in Namibia. http://ombetja.org. "OYO works with young people to target social issues such as HIV prevention, sexual and reproductive health, children's and human rights, gender, gender-based violence, alcohol and drug abuse, stigma and discrimination through writing, drama, dancce, music and visual art." I will be working with the youth and dance groups to develop a project based around one of these issues and will also deliver continuing professional development for local staff who will then share their skills with the wider local community. It's a fantastic program and I'm honored to be involved.

To make it happen, as always, we need to raise both awareness and funds. And not content to be still about these things, we've got a fantastic party lined up in October at the culturally and artistically diverse Richmix in London. The event is jam packed (and packing more each day as we confirm performers) and will not only include some amazing musical acts and dj's with VERY SPECIAL GUEST, it sees ironINC Dance Company return with our signature production of "Due to Unforeseen Circumstances..." or as most people like to remember it, "The Motorcycle Piece." It is the first time the show will be performed in London in 5 years! If you've never seen it, this is the perfect opportunity to do so. Afterwards get your boogie on to the music and you can be doubly pleased that your attendance is supporting a great cause as all proceeds from the evening go to the ironINC in Africa Program. I really do hope to see you there.

And finally... Flirting with the x-factor...

This month's news sees another foray into the world of popular music and their video promos. I had the opportunity to meet and work with director Corin Hardy (who has that CRAZY Prodigy video in his repetoire). He directed the brand new video release from Olly Murs out now with the single coming out later this summer. Some of you closet x-factor fans may remember him...

The video was a lot of fun and a rather riotous day in an East London skatepark with all manner of folk taking part. The single, 'My Heart Skips a Beat,' features Brighton duo, The Rizzle Kicks. Who as you can see are just as much fun as they sound and are also getting some big Radio 1 play with THEIR new single, 'Down with the Trumpets.' After Chris Moyles tweeted about it, Nerina Pallot's

new video got 65,00 hits in 24 hours, making it the

most watched music video on Youtube!

In March, I began a new research and development project with media, film and visual artist Adam Seaman.

We are exploring public interactions, interventions and interesting happenings that come as a result.

Tabu-Flo at Breakin' Convention

The yearly B-boy, B-girl, breakdance and hip-hop extravaganza at Sadler's Wells sees some new work from some unexpected places.

Uganda's Tabu-Flo will be performing alongside their documentary film called "The Night Crawlers."

Based on local mythology of people who become zombies at night, the piece is attracting quite a lot of attention from local dance sites to the Economist magazine.

I had the opportunity to meet some of the dancers in Tabu Flo through the Breakdance Project Uganda in 2009. It's brilliant to see the possibilities that dance can bring to people all over the world.

"It was great to get the news that Dancefest had been successful in its application to Arts Council England to become part of the National Portfolio. For us this will mean an uplift in funding from 2012 – 2015 and lots of hard work to meet our goals. 2011 is Dancefest’s anniversary and its growth from a 2 week festival to the dance development organisation for Herefordshire and Worcestershire is a tremendous achievement and tribute to the hard work of the team. However celebration is tempered by the knowledge that so many other hard working companies had partial or total cuts in their funding and we can only hope that they will find a way through this very difficult period."

We've been rehearsing with the lead dancers on the 12 Moves Project and getting ready for the guerilla events in July. Dancefest have been in recruitment overdrive to get 100 people signed up to dance in the flashmobs.

After several false starts, some major changes, and a few bruises, the new website is finally up!

This is an exciting development as the new site better reflects the diversity of the work I've become interested in since founding ironINC in 2005.

Birmingham Opera on BBC2

In 2009 I had the distinct pleasure of working as Assistant Choreographer with the thrillingly unique Birmingham Opera.

This Saturday, February 19th, BBC2 premieres Birmingham Opera Company's 2009 production of "Othello."

Incorporating 300 community and professional performers, this site-speciifc production was presented in a derelict factory in the heart of Birmingham.

After receiving rave reviews (5 stars in the Guardian and the TImes), the production was nominated for Best Opera in 2009 by the Royal Philharmonic Society.

Running alongside the production was the made for T.V. documentary about director Graham Vick, his vision for inclusivity within the arts with Birmingham Opera and his work with the professional opera houses of Italy and beyond.

Tune in to BBC2 this Saturday, February 19th from 15:25 to watch both the documentary and the award nominated, "Othello."
